The President of the Union of the Comoros, Chair of the African Union, His Excellency AZALI Assoumani, met with His Excellency General ABDEL FATTAH AL-BURHAN, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, on Thursday, September 21st, 2023.
His Excellency President AZALI Assoumani had previously held talks with the two Generals, His Excellency General ABDEL FATTAH AL-BURHAN, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan and HE General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, on the situation in the Republic of Sudan.
Both Sudanese leaders have renewed their confidence in the Chair of the African Union and requested him to accompany them in the search for a solution, that will be acceptable to all, to the crisis that opposes them.
They both commended the continuous efforts that the Comorian President, has been making, in a discreet, credible and efficient manner, since the outbreak of hostilities on April 15, and his willingness to find a solution, to end the war in Sudan.
Since then, President AZALI Assoumani has indeed been supporting all the mediation initiatives, both local and regional. It is in this context and in a desire to act urgently, that both parties have placed their trust in him to conduct this mediation.
President AZALI Assoumani therefore intends to set up, in the near future, a commission in charge of good offices in Sudan. This mediation commission will visit the Sudan to make contact with both parties in view of creating the appropriate conditions for the President to visit Sudan in person, for the purpose of supporting all the initiatives aiming at restoring peace and security in that country.
